Crash Consistent and application consistent backup for the same job

I'm using VDP 6.1 in ESXi 6 environment cluster to backup virtual machines and I noted the same Windows guest OS has different kind of backup:

Crash Consistent or application consistent backup

E.g. the same job for Windows 2008 sometimes gets Crash Consistent backup and it sometimes get application consistent backup?

So logs show for some day "application consistent backup and for other days "Crash Consistent backup"

What is the reason to get different types of backup for the same job? In this server there is no database.

thanks

Hi everyone,

We are trying to backup linked-clone VMs in our vSphere environment. I have tried google around but did not see a promising solution.

If there is anyone that had experience in backing up linked-clone VM, could you give us some advices?

Thanks and best regards,

VMWare announced the End of Availability (EOA) of VMware Data Protection (2149614).

This is quite disappointing, as many customers might have opted for using VDP after the announcement that VMware vSphere Data Protection Advanced became part of VMware vSphere (and did no longer require purchase of a separate license):

"Starting March 1, 2015, VMware vSphere Data Protection Advanced will be consolidated into VMware vSphere Data Protection ... All functionality available with vSphere Data Protection Advanced, previously available as a standalone product, is now included in VMware vSphere Data Protection 6.0."

If I understand it correctly, customers that are using VDP now need to change their backup policies and again need to purchase from VMWare:

"Beginning today, Dell EMC is offering you a complimentary migration to the more robust and scalable Dell EMC Avamar Virtual Edition."

Comments welcome!

Microsoft DPM - what minimal ESX license needed

$

Hi all,

I'm not able to find the minimal ESX license needed for MS DPM compatibilty.

What I found so far:

- DPM uses VADP API which I identified as vSphere vStorage API.

- According to datasheet, the Essentials Kit includes VMware vSphere vStorage APIs

- However, according to Thomas Krenn's article the "Data recovery" feature is included only in Essentials Kit Plus (see https://www.thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/VMware_vSphere_6_Editions_Overview).

So now I'm wondering if Essentials Kit is enough for both backup and restore, or just for backup (if restore feature is included only in Essentials Plus)...

Does anyone know the answer?

Thank you,

R.*

Hello,

I recently upgraded my VDP 6.1.2 to VDP 6.1.4. I can't backup my VMs any more. Each time, I launch a backup job, it stops immediately and I receive the following error :

Error: An attempt was made to backup a client in a group failed because the client does not have any data matching the data target specified in the dataset.

Could you help me to sort it out.

Thanks

VDP 6.1 Backup Failures

Hi,

I've recently inherited a vCenter environment where a small number of the VMs are being backed up using VDP 6.1. The backups are currently failing and I'm not really getting anywhere with troubleshooting as I'm struggling to get the logs.

The job fails immediately, from inside the vSphere client I recieve;

Reason: VDP: An unexpected error occurred with the following error code: 30983.

Log file retrieved is empty.

When trying to download the client logs from the appliance website I receive the following error:

Download failed: I/O error.

Possible cause could be insufficient disk space. Please check available space on the download location.

Definitely sufficient space. I've connected to the appliance and check the client job logs manually and there doesn't seem to be any there.

There is 8TB of storage available so we've not run out there.

Not to sure where to go from here.

Thanks.

VMDK recovery from Delta file

$

Long story short - a folder was deleted from the datastore which contained the flat and descriptor file for one drive on a server containing very important data. This was also the time when we found out the backups were corrupt. We have the *000001-ctk.vmdk, *000001-delta.vmdk, and 000001.vmdk file for this drive. Is it possible to recover the main descriptor and flat file (or the entire deleted directory) from this?

Any help is greatly appreciated

E10007 Miscellaneous Error Backing Up VM

$

I have recently setup a small new virtual environment.  One of the key features is a vDP backup appliance running on a host at physically separate location, with backups being performed over the network.  This allows for backups that are protected from disasters like fire.

I am trying to backup 3 VMs from one host to this backup appliance, using a single backup job.  Two of them are able to backup fine, but one VM is always erroring out with this error:

VDP: Backup job (Main Backup) failed to backup client Main Server.  Execution error: E10007:Miscellaneous Error.

I haven't been able to find much more of value, except poking around some text logs in the vDP appliance I saw some SSL communications errors in the nfcssl protocol.

I should also add that the VM in question is a Windows Server 2008 R2 standard guest OS.  I have set disk.EnableUUID to false, and I'm using vshadow.exe in a script file to prep the VSS for backup during the snapshot process.  However, one of the other VMs that is successfully backing up is the exact same server OS and configuration, and it is working fine.

Both hosts are Dell servers running ESXi 5.1.

Also, this VM is also the largest of the 3 VMs, with a 1 TB partition with about 100GB utilized.  At one point it had an RDM disk attached, but after reading that can cause problems I have detached it and still get the error.

Thanks in advance for any help!

"Cannot complete operation due to concurrent modification by another operation." after VDP update

I've just updated VDP to 5.1.10.32 following Administration Guide. I removed snapshot after update but I'm not able to set disks to "Independent - Persistent“ mode again. I've got "File []/vmfs/volumes/5093aae5-979ec04c-8556-180373ede2e6/vSphere Data Protection/vSphere Data Protection_2-000001.vmdk was not found“ message first and "Cannot complete operation due to concurrent modification by another operation." messages now. No change after reboot.

Could it be related to not running VMware Tools in vCenter Appliance?

Corrupted Files after snapshot deletion - recovery

I was attempting to increase disk size on the primary disk of a VM. I followed instructions to delete all snapshots. After I noticed that the disk type went from Thin provisioned to Thick provisioned. After increasing the disk size in the VM properties I powered on the machine and received multiple errors:

An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM <NAME>.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/NUMBER/NAME.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

The system cannot find the file specified

VMware ESX cannot find the virtual disk "/vmfs/volumes/NUMBER/NAME-000003.vmdk". Verify the path is valid and try again.

Module DiskEarly power on failed.

Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/NUMBER/NAME_4-000004.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

The system cannot find the file specified

VMware ESX cannot find the virtual disk "/vmfs/volumes/NUMBER/NAME.vmdk". Verify the path is valid and try again.

I have attempted to follow the instructions to recreate the vmdk file, but have had no success. Is there any other option to get this machine back?

Restore config from 5.1 to 6.5

Tried to upgrade a standalone ESXi 5.1 to 6.5U1 (both local and external datastores)

First of all... I backuped everything... and made even sure I got a staged copy offline.

Booting off from the ISO, the installation reported no ESXi installed on any of the partitions it could find.

Ok, fine, let me reboot (without me accepting any writing to disk being done).

After booting the server reported:

BANK5: Invalid update counter

BANK6: not a VMware boot disk

No hypervisor found.

I googled it and found that it could be a faulty USB stick (well here actually an SD card), so I inserted it into a laptop, and it asked me if I wanted to format the disk. No.

I managed to copy a stage.tgz file from the SD card, and earlier, I made a copy of the ESXi, so I also go a configbundlexxx.tgz (or I actually forgot the backup default file name...

I imaged the SD card into a new USB-stick (I thought I could be lucky that it would boot the stick this way, but no...

Well, I ran the 6.5 installer, and I hoped that it could find the 5.1 installation and upgrade this, but no... so I reinstalled a fresh 6.5 (this is maybe what I did wrong instead of installing 5.1), and I hoped that I could restore at least one of the backup configurations, I got...

But no... after a reboot the server came up with a fresh 6.5 and I it did not accept "vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/restore_config /tmp/configBundle.tgz". I haven't tried doing:

https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2043048

But this seems not to be for 6.5 - I do have the stage.tgz from the original setup though, but there was not time to try it out.

Now, the server is running 6.5, and I succeeded importing the most important VM's (so that people kan work... but it is only a singe network. I need all my configutation... I need network, iSCSI... everything...

Instead of setting everything up again, I would rather be able to use one of the config files I got...

What is the correct approach in my case? Will I be able to use a 5.1 backup on a 6.5 setup (same hardware)

Regards, Lars.
