Detected an invalid snapshot configuration....

Hello all.

I have Googled the issue, but was unable to solve it with the suggestions.

A bit of info:

I have 2 VMware ESXi version 6.0.0 build 3620759

Between the 2 hosts i have a replication (Veeam), and during a replica, the server ran out of space.

I freed up som space, and got things working.

Afterwards my Veeam replics and backup of VM's on that server started failing.

I removed the VMware snapshots of the running hosts, and ran a consolidation.

Trying to make a snapshot, i get the error:

"Detected an invalid snapshot configuration"

Afterwards i tried, among theese things:
- Reboot a VM.

- Shutdown and start a VM.

- Shutdown and moving the vmsd file to a new location.

- Snapshot, same error.

- Consolidating the VM, same error.

- With the VM running, moving te vmsd file to a new location and make a new snapshot. Same error.

The content of the vmsd file is:

.encoding = "UTF-8"

snapshot.lastUID = "1914"

So i found this article on VMware:

VMware Knowledge Basehttps://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1026043

I'm a bit stuck as i cant reboot the server, and im not sure if i need to reboot. But i logged in using SSH, and i found the Vmid.

The reload command dident work.

What i'm seeking, is any other solutions, whare i dont have to reboot.
And it is ESXi version 6, and it doesent seem to have the same tech Support mode.

Or maby a confirmation that i'm on the right path.

I use VDP to protect vcenter's virtual machine, but when VDP backs up mysql's machine, the time zone is out of order. How can I solve this problem?Thank you very much

Cannot consolidate VM

Hello,

we use IBM SPP in order to backup VMs. This night the Host on which the backup VM is crashed...so the backup never finished. Yet, there are some machines which now need consolidation.

As there seems to be a file lock I cannot do this. I deleted The delta file present, after this the machine could not be powered on anymre, so I had to restore the file. What could I do? Running

Unable to delete Snapshots

Hi,

We are using Veeam Backup & Replication version 10.0 for backup.

VMware vCenter Appliance 6.7 u2 and tree ESXi hosts version 6.5.0.

During backup last weekend, vCenter was unable to delete the snapshot after Veeam backup on one VM (Windows 2012 server).Snapshot bilde.jpg

When i try to delete the SnapShots manually by using vCenter, I got this error message:

Another process.jpg

Now, we are not able to power off the VM, Migrate, Clone, Edit settings because of the message "another task is already in progress"

What can we do do solve the problem?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Best regards,

Audun

VMware NetBackup Errors

In vCenter (6.7), all of our successful Symantec NetBackup jobs show with Type "Error".

pic1.JPG

pic2.JPG

We had reached out to NetBackup support and received the following response:

"NetBackup only communicates to VMware via the VDDK API.  From a NetBackup perspective, if the jobs are successful in the Activity Monitor with no errors, then the backup image was created, captured, and stored properly.  Any errors within the VMware environment should be investigated from a VMware perspective.”

We verified the backups are actually successful by restoring a few VMs.

Is there any option to set this particular event "event.com.veritas.netbackup.success.V2.fullFormat" to show a status of "information" instead of "Error"?

License req. to backup restore OS on ESXi?

Hi,

Sorry for starting with the probably most stupid Q.  I have just entered the world of ESXi and I have installed the first ESXi and a couple of OS's, and it's all working fine.

But for saftey reason, I would like to backup and restore the different OS's, and maybe even the whole disk!

Q1.  is that possible?

Q2. Is that possible with the free license or do I need full license to performe at least the first task (backup/restore an OS), or both (backup/restore the whole disk)?

expand storage in vdp

In ESXi 6.0 I'm using basic Data Protection 6.1.3.7.0 and It uses n.3 VMDK files of 512 GB each one which are stored in 2 TB datastore, now  space is nearly full.

What do you suggest me ?

  1. I can add 2nd Data Protection VM with bigger storage and migrate old backups to the new VDP ? If yes, can I deploy the last version 6.1.11 ? Afterwards I will delete first VDP.
  2. in actual VDP can I add the 4th VMDK which will be in 2nd datastore ?

thanks

Hello,

I need your help.

I want using XSIBackup Free on ESXi 7.0.

Backup  working correct, but problem is with email notifications.

XSIBackup must be able to make a change to the file:  /etc/vmware/firewall/service.xml

If I try to change the permission manually (from 444 to 644), ESXi will return this error message:

[root@HPMicroS01-ESXi70:~] chmod 644 /etc/vmware/firewall/service.xml

chmod: /etc/vmware/firewall/service.xml: Operation not permitted

[root@HPMicroS01-ESXi70:~]

Thx. for help.

Backup Queries.

Hi Gurus,

In my environment, I have 3 ESXi and multiple VM's. I have few queries related to backups. Some of the VM's are Thick Provisioned and some of the VM's are thin provisioned. I want to do a backup of the VMs and move them to an NFS server as part of the Backup. Below are my queries.

  1. The VM  which is thick provisioned has a 500 GB Datastore and it has data around 100GB in it. If I want to take a full backup of the VM do the size of the NFS share needs to be the same as the data store or it can be the same as the amount of data in the datastore i:e 100 GB?
  2. There is another VM that is thin provisioned but has a 500 GB Datastore presented to it and has around 100 GB data in it. If I take a backup of the VM can I use a 120GB NFS share to do the backup of the VM?

Thanks all in advance for all the help

Thanks

VSPHERE 6.7. Backup issue VM Host. Failure running CHKDSK /F /R

$

There are two drives on the host (Server 2012 R2) and from a Veeam backup I cannot restore guest files from the C: drives as it does not show, only the d Drive shows.

Veeam could not find any issues other than a problem with the drive showing in their logs and was recommended to schedule restart running CHKDSK /F /R.

When I scheduled and ran chkdsk /f /r I checked the WININIT log files after it completed and saw steps 1-3 passed however step 4 failed with "The disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters" and listed various files.

I removed these files and scheduled another checkdsk /f /r restart and this time I get to step 5 and get the attached error.  Note I have also attached the original error

When I further checked the server log files  I noticed that the weekly schedule scanndisk was failing with event ID 257 - We have a Dell SAN

I am assuming that the chkdsk /f /r should run with VMWARE?  Any suggestions as no other server is having these issues

VM with consolidated disk

Hi,

I have a VM that had a 100GB disk with 90% occupied.

We created another 150GB disk and migrated the data to this new one.

As this VM had a snapshot, the time to remove the snapshot took a long time even with the VM turned off and was canceled.

Now the disk is about to be consolidated and when we try it has an error.

I need to fix this problem and think of some alternatives:

1 - A backup of the agent using Veeam for example and restore the disk in VMDK format and attach to the VM after removing the bad disk.

But I wondered if it would be applicable to use vSphere Replication to have the shortest possible downtime. But I believe that it will present some type of error because the disks need to be requesting consolidation. Will it really show an error or will it be able to replicate using the disk with the current information (-flat of the snapshot)?

Or would moving the VM from one dastastore to another also work?

Thank you.

VMFS datastore recovery need

continuum saw some of your post, probably you can help

For sure there corruption on a VMFS 6 datastore for specific VM. We find the source of all these corruption. Now that fix, we try to recover one VM.

The client don't have any full vm backup (Vmdk) only internal data backup.

I have already try voma tool to check and fix(not available for VMFS6)   result : 1500 bad

Try recreate vmdk file, not working either

Look like corruption of 2 flat file (disk1 and 2). Attach file

The vm don't want to power on error "File system specific implementation of OpenFile[file] failed"

Thank for your help

I had to move a vm to a different datastore but I mounted and booted the parent vmdk file and now all data is gone for the past few weeks and it has reverted back prior to our last snapshot. Is there anyway for me to get that data back? I have attached my log file. We had a snapshot created a couple of weeks ago but now I cant get it to see all of our changed data since the 14th. I havent changed the content ID in the snapshot descriptor since i'm not comfortable with that and I would rather get sound advice 1st! Help!!!

Hi I am considerable new to ESXi and to this forum. Background of the problem, I have 4 virtual machine: Windows 7, Windows 10, Linux and etc. I was copying a 30GB iso file to datastore last night. When I woke up I found the datastore browser in webclient is timing out so I'm not sure the 30GB upload had been completed. Then I put to maintenance mode so I can restart the host. However after restarting then I found that all of my 4 virtual machine become in accessible, see below screenshot. Please assist what is the next step?  Thanks.

New to Vmware

Hello ALL, I am hoping someone can help me. This is all new to me and my server has been creating snapshots and my datastore is getting full, however I deleted one of the snapshots from the datastore browser and it turned the file into  XXXXXXXX-0003-sesparse.vmdk file at large file. I have some time in this VM as it is with everyone but if there is a way to get it back up and working I would be most grateful. As it stands now the VM will not boot up. I have like xxxxxx-00001 through 000018.vdmk files and also some snapshots and running out of things to try. I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. I am running ESXI 6.7 Update 3 (build 14320388) and the VM is running CentOS 7. Thank you for your time in this matter.
